About WHES

Woodmen Hills Elementary School, located in Falcon Zone at 8308 Del Rio Road in Peyton, opened its doors in 1999 and consistently has an enrollment of approximately 500 students, Preschool through fifth grade. The staff and community are proud of the fact that this large school has an overwhelming "small school" sense and feel about it. The staff engage all learners with personalized learning opportunities where students are truly the pilots of their own education.

Curriculum

Woodmen Hills Elementary follows the curriculum approved by the Board of Education of Falcon School District 49 and the Colorado Department of Education.  We are a Professional Learning Community that works collaboratively to educate our students.  Teachers work together in “instructional teams.”  Flexible groupings may be used during the day to provide instruction that closely matches student needs.

The elementary school curriculum promotes skill development in core academic areas based on the Colorado Academic Standards which you can explore linked here.  The development of language-related skills is emphasized.  Students are provided many opportunities to apply learned skills through activities that require higher-levels of thinking, such as: creating projects, writing reports, and preparing presentations.

Woodmen Hills Elementary School utilizes core curriculum across all classrooms, Kindergarten-5th grade, to support high impact instruction and student learning for all students.

CKLA is utilized as the core curriculum for English Language Arts (ELA / literacy).  CKLA is a content-rich literacy curriculum distinguished by robust and sequential knowledge building, as well as systematic foundational skills instruction. CKLA 3–5 consists of original texts systematically and coherently ordered to build broad content knowledge in science, social studies, and the arts. An intentional approach to building knowledge invites students to engage with and make connections across topics not commonly taught in elementary literacy classrooms (e.g., Ancient Greece and the War of 1812 in grade 2). In K–2, high-interest, fully decodable stories advance along with students’ foundational reading skills.

SAVVAS enVision Math is utilized as the core curriculum for Math. enVision®, a proven-effective math series, is used in math classrooms everywhere. Deep conceptual understanding is aided by visual models, personalized learning, and 3-act tasks. Vertical alignment from Kindergarten through Grade 12 helps schools address mathematical standards.

SAVVAS Experience Science is utilized as the core curriculum for Science. Where Wonder and Science Connect — The Experience Science™ 5E curriculum makes it easy for teachers to fit science into their week using short, station-based lessons. This dynamic program brings science concepts to life with motivating and interactive experiences for today’s classroom.

SAVVAS myWorld is utilized as the core curriculum for Social Studies.  myWorld Interactive K–5 social studies encourages students to explore their world, expand their thinking, and engage their college, career, and civic awareness. Create active, responsible citizens who can make a difference now.

Music, Physical Education, Art, Library, Project Based Learning (PBL) and Technology programs supplement the academic curriculum.  Special Education classes, a Gifted and Talented program, and a Culturally Linguistically Diverse Education (CLDE) add to the educational programs and are available for eligible students.  In addition, all students receive interventions in ELA and math through WIN (What I Need) time.  Also, our school Counselor supports student learning through guidance lessons in classrooms and small group and individual support.

Community

The students benefit from an active Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) that goes the extra mile to make the school one of the best in the Pikes Peak region. They also have a tremendous amount of supportive parent volunteers, averaging 5-10 volunteers per day assisting with various building-wide tasks, supporting events for students, staff, and families, and so much more!

The Falcon Zone

That tradition carries on today with six highly successful schools: Falcon High, Falcon Middle, Falcon Elementary School of Technology, Woodmen Hills Elementary, Meridian Ranch Elementary, and Bennett Ranch Elementary. You can learn more about our history, traditions, and our vision for modern personalized learning here below.

Falcon Zone offers the following programs: Academy of Health Science, Academy of Finance, Academy of Information Technology, Air Force JROTC, FBLA, Distributive Education Clubs of America, Link Crew, National Honor Society, Student-to-Student program, and many others. The zone offers more than 20 advanced placement and CU Succeed Classes. Its schools performed well on CMAS and SAT.

While the Falcon Zone greatly honors tradition, we also embrace that our leaders today deserve a different learning experience from yesteryear - one that will prepare them to be successful in our ever-changing world.

Through Empower Falcon Zone (Empower FZ), we aim to empower our learners by offering three main things:

Engaging Environments

Enhanced Opportunities

Elevated Instruction

We want our students to have more voice and choice in their education. We desire to cater more to their interests and needs while at the same time providing them with unique, challenging, expanded, and blended learning opportunities.
